Step by Step Umrah Guide

Umrah is a voluntary pilgrimage to Makkah that can be performed at any time of the year. It consists of four main acts: Ihram, Tawaf, Sa'i, and Halq/Taqsir. Below is a step-by-step guide on how to perform Umrah correctly.

02 Umrah. Embark on a Sacred Journey

1. Preparation Before Ihram (Niyyah - Intention)

Ensure physical and spiritual cleanliness (Ghusl, cutting nails, wearing clean clothes).
Wear Ihram (for men: two white, unstitched sheets; for women: any modest Islamic dress).
Pray two Rakat Nafl (optional but recommended) before entering the state of Ihram.
Make Niyyah (intention) for Umrah:

  • "لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ عُمْرَةً" (Labbaik Allahumma Umratan) – "O Allah, I intend to perform Umrah."
    Recite Talbiyah continuously:
  • (Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik, Labbaik Laa Shareeka Laka Labbaik, Innal-Hamda Wan-Ni’mata Laka Wal-Mulk, Laa Shareeka Lak)

2. Entering Makkah & Masjid Al-Haram

Enter Makkah with humility and reverence.
Before entering Masjid Al-Haram, recite the du'a:

  • "اللَّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ" (Allahummaftah li Abwaba Rahmatika – "O Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy").

3. Tawaf (Circling the Kaaba 7 Times)

Begin at Hajar Aswad (Black Stone), say Bismillah, Allahu Akbar, and touch or point towards it.
Make seven circuits around the Kaaba (anticlockwise direction).
Recite du'as and supplications (any du'a can be recited; no specific du'a is required).
At the end of each circuit, say "Allahu Akbar" when reaching the Hajar Aswad.
After completing seven rounds, pray two Rakats behind Maqam Ibrahim (if possible).

4. Sa'i (Walking Between Safa and Marwah)

Start at Safa, face the Kaaba, and recite:

  • "إِنَّ ٱلصَّفَا وَٱلْمَرْوَةَ مِن شَعَآئِرِ ٱللَّهِ" (Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the signs of Allah - Surah Al-Baqarah 2:158).
Walk between Safa and Marwah seven times (Safa to Marwah = 1 round, Marwah to Safa = 2nd round).
Men should run lightly between the two green markers.
Dua can be made at each point.

5. Halq (Shaving) or Taqsir (Trimming)

Men should shave their heads (Halq) or trim their hair evenly (Taqsir).
Women should cut a fingertip-length portion of hair.

6. Completion of Umrah

Exit the state of Ihram after hair trimming or shaving.
Umrah is now complete, and you can engage in other acts of worship.

Additional Tips

Stay hydrated and avoid crowding during Tawaf and Sa'i.
Perform extra prayers and duas in Masjid Al-Haram.
Make lots of du'a and seek forgiveness from Allah.

May Allah accept your Umrah. Ameen!
